Senior Project: Pacific Mammal Rescue Center

This project has challenged me to truly make an impact in my close environment or community and
learn
how best to support those in my area. I learned about the struggles of sea lions, elephant seals, and harbor

seals. Some issues included malnutrition, lack of maternal figure, pneumonia, sea lion pocks, and

boats/people. I also learned about how these issues are treated. Malnutrition in particular takes a bit

longer to treat because the animals must learn to gain a habit or understanding of how to catch their own

food. I also learned how to run a kiosk and get people interested in the topic you are presenting. The topic

I, fortunately, get to present is one that I care about in these animals and I feel very lucky for that. I have

thoroughly enjoyed what I have done this week. I have met some amazing women who work at the rescue

center and have gotten to learn about their work on a very close level. I also have enjoyed having the

opportunity to see firsthand the treatment of these animals. Overall, I feel very fortunate to get to be in

Laguna Beach California and to learn about this topic. Everything happened about as I expected. The

kiosk is at Huntington Beach which is not the beach I first expected us to be working at. I was also

surprised when Kathryn and I chose to try and be vegan for the week to help the environment and live

more sustainably. I believe that I benefited exponentially well this week through what I had learned. The

important information I gathered and conversations I had helped me to learn more thoroughly about a

topic I care about. I also got to learn important skills if I ever chose to go into marine biology. I believe

that this helps me achieve my goals as I would like to possibly have a background in marine biology or

more broadly marine science. I also just enjoy helping my community and this project has helped me to

further that.
